March 23, 2023 - The first time St. Lawrence and Union played one another in men’s lacrosse was nearly 100 years ago, on May 15, 1925. After playing four times in the 1920s, the teams did not square off again until 1963. Since then, the rivals have played every year except two, with the Saints holding a 40-28 all-time series advantage over the Dutchmen.
Saturday, March 25 marks the latest chapter in this storied rivalry which has ramifications for both the Division 3 top 20 and the Liberty League title chase. This year’s tilt will be at storied Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium on Union’s campus in Schenectady and will be the Liberty League opener for both teams.
Entering the week, the Liberty dominated the polls with three teams ranked in the Top 8. RIT (7-1) was third in our composite of all three major polls, while Union (5-1) was fifth, and St. Lawrence (6-0) was eighth. All three competed Wednesday in mid-week games with RIT rallying to defeat cross-town rival St. John Fisher, 16-14, and St. Lawrence defeated a pesky Western New England team, 14-9, at Boston University. Union, however, stumbled, losing to 11th-ranked Middlebury, 15-9, in a spring break game in Austin, Texas.
RIT edged Union in last season’s NCAA tournament final, 12-10, giving the Tigers back-to-back championships. Four Liberty teams made the tournament field, allowing league members to possibly lay claim to the title of most competitive conference. The conference preseason poll favored RIT first, Union second, and St. Lawrence third with RPI and Ithaca battling for fourth.
Saturday’s matchup will give either the Dutchmen or Saints a leg up for the regular season title. Union will host RIT on April 8, while St. Lawrence closes the regular season on April 29 at RIT.
Game time this Saturday for the Saints and Dutchmen is 1 pm ET and can be viewed on Union’s livestream.
