No. 2 RIT at No. 5 RPI to open Liberty League play
March 22, 2024 - One year ago, the RPI Engineers started slow, going 3-5 in non-Liberty League action. They lost to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, MIT, and Hamilton, among others. But the team rallied, finishing 6-1 in league play to place second, good enough to host Union in the conference semis. The season ended there, however, with a 13-10 loss.
The 2024 season has unfolded in a much different fashion. Ranked No. 17 in our preseason D3 Lax Composite Poll (USA Lacrosse Magazine did not have RPI in the preseason Top 20), the Engineers have climbed methodically each week, dispatching all eight of their non-conference opponents, outscoring them 143-79 along the way. But now No. 2 RIT (8-0), fresh off a convincing 16-11 win over Tufts at the Mustang Classic, comes to Troy for a huge opening game of the league schedule.
No surprise, but our D3 Lax Game of the Week presented by Powell Lacrosse is No. 2 RIT at No. 5 (in our poll) RPI, Saturday, March 23 at 1 pm ET. Live stream link is here.
To say RIT has had RPI’s number might be an understatement. The Tigers hold an overall 31-7 series edge, but it is recent history that RPI will be trying to block on Saturday. RIT has won 26 of the last 29 games. RPI’s most recent victory was a 13-12 thriller in Troy two years ago as the Engineers rallied to score six of the game’s final nine goals to erase a 9-7 deficit on their home turf.
The Liberty League opens league play with RIT (No. 2), St. Lawrence (No. 3 tie), RPI (No. 5), Union (No. 8), and Skidmore (No. 21) all ranked in our Week 7 D3 Lax Composite Poll. Saturday’s game may well set the tone for how stout the League really is.
Keep your eye on the weather in northern New York. Up to 4 inches of snow forecast Friday night into Saturday morning followed by rain throughout the game.
