When researching the Coastal Lacrosse Conference you will find two things in its history, the utter dominance of Salisbury and the drastic comings and goings of schools in the lacrosse conference.
Since the 2006-2007 season, there have been 15 seasons of the C2C conference (with the exception of the 2019-20 season that was canceled due to Covid-19). Out of the 15 seasons, Salisbury has won 10 C2C/Coastal Lacrosse conference championships. From 1995-2009 the Gulls won 19 straight CAC championships. In 49 years of Salisbury lacrosse, the Gulls have an overall record of 730-135 (.844), a 88-27 (.765) in the NCAA Tournament, appearing in 39 tournaments and winning 12 of them. Amazingly, Salisbury boasts an incredible 156-7 (.957) record in conference play.
While Salisbury has been a constant, the remaining members of the C2C/Coastal hail from all over the place. In 2007-08, the original nine-team conference shrunk to seven with the departure of Catholic University of America and Goucher College, leaving Salisbury, Ville Julie College, St. Mary’s College of Maryland, Wesley College, York College, University of Mary Washington, Marymount University, and Hood College.
In 2008-09, Ville Julie College, later renamed to Stevenson University, joined and Frostburg State University was added to the conference for the 2010-11 season. In 2012-13, Stevenson left to join the MAC Commonwealth and Hood College would follow suit to the MAC Commonwealth as well, bringing the total down back to seven.
In 2013-14, Christopher Newport University and Southern Virginia University joined to bring the total back to nine. The C2C remained solid for a few years until the 2018-19 season which would see the departure of Wesley College and Marymount University. Wesley would cease all operations in 2021 and merge with Delaware State University.
In the 2019-20 season (which was suspended due to Covid-19) Frostburg State moved from Division 3 to Division 2. York College departed in 2020-21, joining Stevenson and Hood in the MAC Commonwealth. Prior to the 2021-22 season Southern Virginia left to join the USA South and St. Mary’s College of Maryland joined the United East, leaving the C2C with three remaining teams in CNU, Salisbury, and Mary Washington.
The 2022-23 season marks the formation of the Coastal Lacrosse Conference with six teams. Kean University (NJ), Montclair State University (NJ), and Stockton College (NJ), the only New Jersey Athletic Conference schools sponsoring lacrosse, migrated from the Colonial States Athletic Conference, partnering with holdovers Salisbury University (MD), Christopher Newport University (VA) and University of Mary Washington (VA). The newly-formed CLC will need to wait two years before being eligible to receive an NCAA tournament automatic qualifier.
