February 16, 2023 - Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis. announced today it would field Division 3 men’s and women’s lacrosse teams in time for the 2025 season. Lawrence will become the ninth D3 lacrosse program in the state of Wisconsin.
The Vikings athletic teams compete in the Midwest Conference which does not currently sponsor lacrosse. Lawrence will be the fifth conference member to offer the sport, joining Beloit College, Cornell College, Lake Forest College, and Monmouth College. Three of those schools - Cornell, Lake Forest and Monmouth - compete in the Midwest Lacrosse Conference while Beloit is an affiliate member of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.
"The ever-growing popularity of lacrosse across the nation, particularly in the Midwest, extends opportunities for student-athletes who are looking to continue their playing careers while pursuing a quality degree at a leading liberal arts university," Lawrence athletic director Jason Imperati said in a news release. "While we have tremendous work ahead, we are excited for the future of both programs and what they will mean for the Lawrence experience and our greater community."
Lawrence is the third D3 school to announce it will begin a program in 2025, joining Alfred State (NY) and Pitt-Bradford (PA).
